It's for men and ladies dancing on their own, with no partner needed. If you dance with someone at home, simply mirror the steps. In this video: • A demonstration of the pattern • The basic in place (time step) and the chassé • Footwork: ball flat • Practice to music • The New Yorker, and the two things that make it look good • The spot turn, and why you should turn late • Keeping your steps small • Syncopation: 4 and 1 • An easy way to remember the pattern KEY POINTS • The pattern: two basics in place, three New Yorkers, then a spot turn • A chassé is three steps over two beats, counted 4 and 1 • Keep your steps under shoulder width: the faster the music, the tighter your steps • On the New Yorker, turn the stepping foot out and line up the back toe with the front heel, with no hip thrust • On the spot turn, anchor the step and turn late, not early CHAPTERS 00:00 Welcome 00:59 Demonstration 01:28 The basic in place 02:25 Foot cam 02:56 What is a chassé? 03:40 Footwork: ball flat 04:27 Practise to music 05:20 Turn your feet out slightly 05:53 The New Yorker 07:13 Mistake to avoid: the hip thrust 07:41 Two New Yorker tips 09:34 Put the basics and New Yorkers together 11:25 The spot turn 13:25 Turn late: anchor the step 15:02 The full pattern 16:37 Keep your steps small 17:54 Syncopation: 4 and 1 19:19 Count it with me 20:23 An easy way to remember the pattern 20:42 Final tips QUICK ANSWERS What is the basic Cha Cha timing? 2 3 4 and 1. The chassé splits a beat, so you take three steps over two beats (4 and 1). What's the most common mistake on the Cha Cha spot turn? Turning too early. Step through, turn the foot out to anchor the step, and then turn. How big should Cha Cha steps be? Keep them under shoulder width. The faster the music, the tighter your steps need to be.
