Bring me the jeans, cara. The pair that fits your hips, fits your legs, fits everywhere, and then stops two inches short of the button. You hold your breath, you lie down on the bed to close the zipper, and by lunchtime the waistband is printing a red line across your stomach.
It isn't your body. The denim in the leg stretches, but the waistband is cut and stiffened so it doesn't. I learned to sew at nine in my father's tailor shop in Biella, Italy, and for 40 years I let out jeans in my own shop in Paterson, New Jersey. Today I give a pair two more inches at the waist. The side seams stay exactly as the factory sold them, the front stays the same, and nobody will notice a thing.
THE 7 TRICKS:
1️⃣ The pull test: why your jeans already have the room
2️⃣ The button check that might save you the whole evening
3️⃣ How little of the jeans you really have to open
4️⃣ The small denim triangle that gives you the room
5️⃣ The gold thread that makes the new seam look like the factory's
6️⃣ The kitchen chair test before you sew for real
7️⃣ Where my father hid every join he ever made
MY HONEST WORDS:
· Sit down in the jeans before you decide. A waist that closes standing up can still dig in when you sit.
· Cut the triangle from an old pair of jeans in the same blue, washed first.
· Use a jeans needle, size 90/14, and go slowly over the thick seams.
· Baste first, try them on, then sew for real.
· Need more than two inches? Use another method. My book has three ways to give a waist more room.
· In my book: the stretch test is on page 38, the sitting test on page 59, moving the button on page 201, and the inserts on page 204.
A tailor charges about $15 to $70 to let out a waist, if she can do it at all. The triangle comes from a pair of jeans you were going to throw away.
Tell me in the comments the most you ever paid a tailor to let out a pair of jeans, and in what town. And tell me, cara: who fixed the jeans in your house when you were little? Tell me her name. I read every one.
Measure twice, cut once, and never trust a seam you didn't press. Ciao, and happy sewing.
