Learning Changes the Conversation | Field Notes in Motion #07

This week I'm exploring what happens when a horse moves from learning through curiosity and exploration into a more structured kind of learning. Parker has spent years colouring outside the lines. He's had space to explore, make choices, make mistakes and learn by experience and observation. Now, as he's maturing, I'm asking for a little more structure and consistency. That changes the conversation. In this Field Note, I'm working with Parker on direction, paying particular attention to the difference between what feels easy for him and what feels more difficult. I'm not looking for perfect circles or perfect bend. I'm interested in whether he can understand my request, find his balance, stay connected to me and gradually become more confident working something out for himself. For Parker, little and often matters. So does giving him enough space to process what I'm asking rather than simply adding more pressure when he doesn't immediately respond. This is where observation becomes so important. What does your horse do when something moves from familiar into unfamiliar? What does uncertainty look like for them? And can we recognise the difference between a horse who is thinking and a horse who is becoming overwhelmed?
