Do You Have One of These 15 Appalachian Surnames DNA Just Uncovered Your True Scots Irish

Appalachian surnames can reveal surprising clues about Scots-Irish ancestry, migration, and family history. If you have one of these 15 Appalachian surnames, your DNA and genealogy may connect your family to Scotland, Ulster, and the dramatic history of the Scots-Irish. The Scots-Irish were not simply “Irish Scots.” Their story began with Lowland Scottish families, Border Reivers, Ulster migration, religious conflict, famine, and eventually one of the largest migrations into colonial America. From Pennsylvania to the Great Wagon Road and deep into the Appalachian Mountains, these families carried their surnames, traditions, and memories with them. In this video, we explore 15 Appalachian surnames and the historical maps hidden behind them. Some belonged to powerful Scottish clans. Others were connected to notorious Border Reiver families who lived by raiding and warfare along the Anglo-Scottish frontier. Their descendants later moved through Ulster before settling across Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, and the Carolinas. Names such as Campbell and Armstrong are only the beginning. Behind these surnames are stories of ancient clans, forced migration, family feuds, massacres, plantations, religious upheaval, and the Great Wagon Road migration into America. But remember: a surname alone cannot prove genetic ancestry. DNA testing and documented genealogy can provide stronger evidence when combined with historical records.
