Everybody can pick a Belgian out of a pasture, so how does a horse that familiar end up on a conservation watch list? I trace the American Belgian Draft back to its Ardennais, Brabant and Flemish roots, the 1887 Wabash, Indiana association that gave it its own book, and the gap in Belgian imports during the First World War. I lay out how far the breed drifted from its ancestors in height, build and coat color, and what work it still does on farms and in sugarbushes today.
