How Urdu Muhavare Actually Work: Rules, Meanings & Classical Poetry | Module 1 | Rekhta Learning
.
A muhavara says something it doesn't literally say, and you have to know where it came from to catch it.
In this opening lesson of Muhavare, Commonly Used Urdu Idioms and Phrases, Prof. Ghazanfar Ali starts with the basic question of what an idiom actually is, and how it differs from a phrase or a proverb. His answer is that these expressions hold more than meaning. They carry stories, cultural references, bits of history and the practical sense of generations who used them before us.
Once you know them, Urdu gets easier to use and a good deal more interesting to write.
The full course works through idioms grouped around everyday things, the eye, food, fire, water, air and soil, and many more you'll hear in ordinary conversation. Each one comes with its meaning, the context it grew out of, and how people use it now.
It's useful for poets, writers and lyricists looking for richer language, for anyone learning Urdu, and for people who just love the way the language turns a phrase.
