CANES POSTCAST: #1 No More... Miami’s 2nd-Half Comeback Falls Short in 31-24 LOSS at Notre Dame

No. 1 Miami’s unbeaten season ends with a 31–24 loss at Notre Dame—but the CANES refused to go quietly. Jim “GRIES” Grieshaber breaks down Miami’s comeback from a 24–3 deficit, the disputed fourth-down end-zone ruling involving Elija Lofton, and the missed opportunities that proved costly in South Bend. Without injured star Malachi Toney, Darian Mensah threw three touchdown passes as Lofton and Cooper Barkate stepped up. Lofton finished with seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown, while Barkate caught ten passes for 92 official yards and two scores. We examine Shannon Dawson’s play calling, Mark Fletcher Jr.’s 13-carry workload, Miami’s first-half goal-line failure, improved second-half protection and the defensive response that brought the CANES back into the game. The decisive sequence: Mensah’s interception, CJ Carr’s fourth-down completion to Nolan James Jr., and Justin Scott’s facemask after a third-and-goal stop helped Notre Dame restore a two-touchdown lead. Miami answered again, but its final chances fell short. Plus: Player of the Game, Turning Point, X-Factor, Who Fudged Up, Second Guess and what this result means for Miami’s College Football Playoff case. Proud of the fight. Frustrated by the finish.
