Deathworld Training Began with 100 Alien Warriors—But Only the Human Engineer Was Smiling HFY
One hundred elite alien warriors landed on a deathworld to be broken, and the only one grinning was the human with the toolbag.
Chief Technician Ifor Talfryn was sent to Torrumoth for one job: keep the relay tower running while the Hegemony's finest recruits survive sixty days of the deadliest training ground in known space. He brought a kettle, a canvas hat and thirty years of mining on a world far worse. The warriors think he is mad. The Warden wants him invisible. But when swarms, packs and storms start thinning the ranks, the engineer begins quietly building water stills, trip-bell alarms and hope, one lopsided gadget at a time.
Then he finds a buried survey, a locked rescue beacon and a date circled in red, and he realizes the training was never meant to be survived. With eighteen days on the clock, a camp full of frightened young warriors and a stampede of ten thousand armored beasts bearing down on their only shelter, he has to decide whether to obey orders or finally show them what humans do when the roof starts to fall.
This is a full-length sci-fi HFY story packed with deathworld survival, clever engineering, reluctant respect and a seriously satisfying payoff. If you love stories where aliens underestimate humans and quiet competence beats brute force, you are in the right place.
