Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin in the Florida Panhandle on Friday night, October 9, 2026, as a Category 2 storm after briefly reaching Category 3 strength. The storm brought powerful winds, extensive power outages, and dangerous coastal storm surges to the northern Gulf Coast.
Although downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone as it moved inland over Alabama, the system continues to drop heavy rain across the Southeast. Widespread flooding, fallen trees, and severe storm surges up to nine feet high caused extensive road closures, flight cancellations, and emergency declarations across multiple states.
In this video, we examine footage of the landfall in Destin, explain the mechanics of dangerous storm surges, cover power outages and local rescues, and look at the ongoing flash flood and tornado risks facing the Southeast.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
