On May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam collapsed above Johnstown, Pennsylvania, unleashing a devastating flood that killed 2,209 people. But the dam wasn't operated by the government anymore. It belonged to a private fishing club. Years before the disaster, the dam had been reconstructed with a lowered crest, missing discharge pipes, and other weakened safeguards. Engineers had raised concerns about its condition, yet the reservoir remained above the towns and industrial communities of the Conemaugh Valley. In this documentary, we investigate the forgotten history of the South Fork Dam, the warnings that preceded its collapse, the terrifying journey of the flood through the valley, and the engineering evidence that still raises questions about whether the disaster could have been prevented. We also examine why an 1891 engineering investigation and a modern 2016 study reached different conclusions about the dam's failure. *Historical sources:* National Park Service — Johnstown Flood National Memorial: https://www.nps.gov/jofl/ National Park Service — History of the South Fork Dam: https://www.nps.gov/jofl/learn/histor...
