Dressage lateral work at the trot: travers, shoulder-in, renvers and leg yield, plus the tiny rider position changes that lift his shoulders. My October 8, 2026 lesson with Lexi Albright on Remington, my 5 year old KWPN gelding by Kjento. Training aha moments • The outside rein controls the tempo. "Really control the tempo with that outside": bend right, half halt on the left, and drop that outside hand down. • From renvers to leg yield you barely change anything. Keep your leg position where it is and "just barely change the bend." • If he pushes against you with his nose, wait. "If he goes a little bit against you with his nose, that's alright. Just wait for him to connect." • Micro movements change his carriage. Turning your thumbs out, dropping your elbows to your hips, pushing your hands down toward the withers and squeezing your fingers all affect how he carries himself while you build engagement. • Those same shoulders are the road to passage. Lexi said the only difference between this trot and passage is the quick snappiness of the hind leg; the shoulder position is the same. What we worked on Travers with the outside rein down, a 10 m circle at B into shoulder-in, renvers, and barely changing the bend for a leg yield, then a few extended steps and my own position (chin up, elbows to hips, fingers squeezing toward the withers). Honest struggle: to this side he wants to put his haunches in, and I have to keep the tempo from rushing. Coach: Lexi Albright, Albright Sporthorses (Netherlands). Lexi develops horses from their first rides under saddle through Grand Prix, and her philosophy is simple: every horse has something to offer, and welfare is never sacrificed for ambition. ▶ Every lesson with Remington, in order (Remington's Lessons playlist):    • Remington's Lessons   🌐 https://doityourselfdressage.com/ Chapters 0:00 Intro 0:06 Travers: outside rein down, control the tempo 1:15 10 m circle at B and shoulder-in 1:45 Change direction, keep the right bend 2:17 Shoulder-in to the left 2:55 Renvers 3:20 Change the bend for the leg yield 4:02 Extended trot steps 4:22 Rider position: thumbs, elbows, abs, fingers 6:13 Collected walk 6:44 Micro movements that change his carriage 9:08 The road to passage #dressage #shoulderin #lateralwork #KWPN #younghorse
