54 minutes of driving from Upper Hutt over the hills to Martinborough, ending up among the vines. The first stretch is pure suburbia, then the road lifts you into the hills and the city disappears behind you. There is a good long run of open mountain road in the middle, and after that the country flattens out. Calm zen instrumentals underneath the whole way. No talking, no commentary, no interruptions. Just the road, the hills, and a quiet soundtrack. This is the one I put on when I want something that settles me down without putting me to sleep. Good for meditation, a slow morning, a long stretch at the desk, or a background loop while you cook. And if you drive it yourself, Martinborough is worth the trip for more than the scenery.
