On October 30 in Montreal, Canada and the European Union finished a digital trade agreement and opened talks to make Canada the first associate member of the EU. That was one more step in a year of deals that left Washington out. Mark Carney flew to Beijing and cut tariffs on canola and Chinese EVs. Europe and India finished what both sides called the mother of all deals. The EU–Mercosur pact switched on after 26 years of talks. Canada also became the first non-European country let into the €150 billion SAFE defense fund. After the 25% and 35% tariffs, Liberation Day, and the jokes about a 51st state, America's closest neighbor started building other routes for its trade, the way a GPS reroutes traffic. This video covers what a trade deal actually is, why Carney told Davos that middle powers are either at the table or on the menu, and how the CPTPP, the India–EU deal and Mercosur fit together. It also looks at what happens to American soybean, pork, defense and auto jobs when the rest of the world gets a discount the United States doesn't. What do you think: is Canada making a smart move by diversifying away from the United States, or a mistake that will cost it more than it gains? Tell us in the comments. #Canada #Trade #Tariffs
