In 1938, archaeologist Luther Cressman dug dozens of sandals woven from sagebrush bark out from under the ash of Mount Mazama, in a small cave near Fort Rock, Oregon. His colleagues doubted him for 13 years. In 1951, one of the first radiocarbon labs burned several pairs and dated them to about 9,050 radiocarbon years, roughly 10,000 calendar years. More than 20 sandals from 7 sites have since been dated directly, to about 10,500 to 9,100 years ago, the oldest directly dated footwear in the world. And in 2026, a piece of sewn hide from the same basin came back at 12,900 to 11,700 years old. Why is the first American still pictured holding a spear point?
