Cycle the Road to Varkala, Kerala, India

The final day of our cycling trip in the Kerala region of India began by leaving our comfortable houseboats behind. We traversed the countryside and along ocean shores travelling south towards the city of Varkala, a small laid-back community perched along a clifftop overlooking the ocean. As most of the days that preceded this one, we pass by lots of people engaged in activity. Kids on their way to school. A multitude of vehicles on the roads but always a sense of respect between us and them as we try to negotiate their country by bike. You can’t help but feel the energy and vitality of the place. The intensity and organized chaos that surrounds you most waking hours. The diversity of people, animals and machines you cycle by each day. Was the trip worth it? Would I go back? It’s not for everybody. One could describe it as an adventure outside your comfort zone. But everyday brought something new and interesting that made it worth being there. So, yes. I would return.
