Rajesh Khanna had eagerly grabbed this film, which was offered in the year of Deewar and Sholay, thinking that perhaps he could dim Amitabh's dazzling aura. But something happened behind the scenes that made the script start to feel utterly pointless for him. He had grown so terrified of Amitabh that, even with his favorite director Manmohan Desai at the helm, he felt he would end up as nothing more than Amitabh's sidekick in the film—and he outright refused to do it. However, from a production standpoint, the film changed hands multiple times and took a full four years to complete. Yet when it finally hit the screens, it created absolute pandemonium. Not only was it the highest-grossing film of 1979, but it propelled Amitabh Bachchan's superstardom to such an unassailable height that stopping him was out of the question—even trying to eclipse him seemed impossible.
