On Vietnam’s vast tidal flats, 25 clam farmers set out to harvest 15 tons (33,000 pounds) of clams in a single day, working against the changing tides.
In this rural Vietnam documentary, follow a team of local clam farmers, mostly between 50 and 70 years old, as they spend 12 hours harvesting clams off the coast of northern Vietnam.
Using high-pressure water jets, the farmers wash clams from the sand into nets. Motorbikes carry heavy bags of clams across the tidal flats, while two men lift loads weighing over 220 pounds onto a boat, where the harvest is sorted by size.
Many of these Vietnamese clam farmers have spent decades working at sea. From long hours in the mud to simple meals and working after dark, their daily lives reveal the hard work, teamwork, and traditions of a coastal community shaped by the tides.
For a typical day of physically demanding work, each person earns around $19.
Experience the real life of our clam farming community and discover how people live and work on Vietnam’s tidal flats.
