Edo Nakasendo Historic Journey : From Imasu-juku 59th post to Kashiwabara-juku 60th post station.

Imasu-juku Imasu-juku was a small town nestled in the mountains. National Route 21 and the JR Tokaido Line run along the northern edge of the town; the post town lies in the centre running north to south, whilst the southern side is a lush, green area of rice paddies and farmland. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any particular points of interest within the post town itself, but there was plenty of unspoilt nature along the route, so I was able to fully enjoy both the history and the natural surroundings. Restaurants seem to be located along National Route 21, but I would recommend bringing some packed food with you (we brought rice balls with pickled plums). On the way from Hiroshige—Imasu-juku to Kashiwabara-juku, I spotted cyclists on numerous occasions. Although the route from Sekigahara-juku to Samegai-juku has some ups and downs, it is mainly downhill, so I think you can enjoy it without putting too much strain on your body. We stopped at the site of an old military encampment just before Imasu-juku, where we saw several solo travellers enjoying a trek. Although we took these photos in late September, the weather has been cool this year, so it looks as though we’ll be able to enjoy trekking and cycling for a long time to come. Kashiwara-juku Kashiwara-juku is located in Ōmi Province—now Shiga Prefecture. On the way to the post town, the old Nakasendo—which people would have walked along during the Edo period—has been preserved, and I felt that travelling the Nakasendo is a truly profound experience. In the post town itself, it was a lively place with sprightly elderly people chatting away here and there. At the sweet shop I popped into, three elderly ladies—who must have been over 80—were enjoying a chat over a cup of tea. Their voices were gentle and soothing to the ear. All the shop staff also appeared to be over 70, yet they were working whilst enjoying a natter. It might well be a lovely place to live. Kashiwabara-juku has a guesthouse, and with traditional inns, breweries and sake cellars still standing, there is plenty to enjoy. When you visit the Kashiwabara-juku tourism website (https://kashiwabara-juku.com), you’re greeted by a spectacular view of the post town covered in snow. It seems to be a post town where you can enjoy all four seasons. I spotted several young people and couples out trekking.
