In the year two thousand, Enron Corporation reported one hundred billion dollars in annual revenue. Fortune magazine had named it the most innovative company in America six years in a row. Its stock traded at ninety dollars per share. Wall Street called it the future of American business. Twenty thousand people worked there and thousands of them had invested their entire retirement savings in company stock. They had been told to. The executives told them personally that the company was strong, the stock was a bargain, and the future was bright.
Every number was fabricated. More than three thousand shell companies existed solely to hide Enron’s real losses. Mark-to-market accounting allowed the company to book money it had never received and might never receive. Andrew Fastow, the CFO who built the fraud, collected thirty million dollars personally from entities he created using Enron’s own funds. In August two thousand one, a vice president named Sherron Watkins handed a seven-page letter directly to CEO Kenneth Lay warning him that the company was going to implode in accounting scandals. Lay hired lawyers. The lawyers said everything was fine. Four months later, Enron filed for the largest corporate bankruptcy in American history. Seventy-four billion dollars in shareholder value destroyed. One point two billion dollars in employee retirement savings gone. Arthur Andersen, the firm that certified Enron’s books for years, collapsed too — taking eighty-five thousand jobs with it.
Kenneth Lay was convicted on all counts in two thousand six. He died six weeks later before sentencing and under federal law his convictions were legally erased. Jeffrey Skilling served twelve years in prison and walked out in two thousand nineteen. The twenty thousand workers who lost everything received nothing.
