AMCA vs Su-57: Why The IAF Chief Issued A Major Warning |
For the first time, the Indian Air Force has openly indicated that India could consider a foreign fifth-generation fighter if delays affect the AMCA Program. IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh has confirmed that Russia has offered its Su-57 Stealth Fighter, although no final decision has been taken. The development could mark an important shift in India’s long-term air-power strategy.
The AMCA Fighter Jet, being developed under the AMCA India programme, remains India’s preferred indigenous fifth-generation aircraft. However, the AMCA Program is still progressing through the industry-selection stage, with induction projected around 2035. The IAF is concerned that a prolonged delay could create a capability gap, particularly as advanced fifth-generation aircraft become increasingly important. Singh said India needs to “fill in the gap” if other countries acquire fifth-generation capabilities, adding that the IAF may need to examine other fighter platforms if the AMCA programme is delayed.
The urgency is clear. The Indian Air Force currently has around 29 fighter squadrons against an authorised strength of 42.5. Singh has said the force needs to induct approximately 36–40 IAF Fighter Jets every year. Alongside AMCA, India is accelerating Tejas Mk1 production and pursuing the proposed 114-aircraft Rafale deal. The Russian offer adds another dimension to India Russia Defence cooperation. The reported India Russia Defence Deal discussions around the Su-57, including possible joint production and technology transfer, could become strategically significant if AMCA faces further delays.
For India Defence News, this is now a major question: will India wait for the AMCA Fighter Jet, or consider the Su-57 India option as an interim fifth-generation capability?
