Today, Charisma is often treated as the “talking stat” — persuasion, deception, intimidation and social skill. But when we go back to the original 1974 D&D rules and Gary Gygax’s 1978 AD&D Player’s Handbook, a rather different idea emerges. Charisma was closely connected with followers, loyalty, personal magnetism and leadership. In this video I look at the surprising history of the word itself, from the ancient Greek kharisma — a special gift or favour — through the idea of charismatic authority, and then back to the earliest days of D&D. Was Gary Gygax actually using the word more accurately than we sometimes do today? And perhaps the real question isn't: “Can I persuade this NPC?” Perhaps it is: “When everything goes wrong, will anybody follow me?” A look at Charisma, leadership and how one of D&D’s six famous characteristics has changed over nearly fifty years. #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #OldSchoolDnD #GaryGygax #ADnD #RPG #TTRPG #DnDHistory Add a stronger opening hook Clarify the video’s historical scope Add a gentle viewer call to action
