How to involve people with a learning disabilityin end-of-life care planning - Irene Tuffrey-Wijne

This session introduces the Victoria & Stuart Project: a co-created toolkit of resources supporting people with learning disabilities to be involved in end-of life care planning. I will explain why the toolkit was developed and share how it was created with nearly 200 contributors, including 36 people with learning disabilities. I will also show what the toolkit contains and explore how to include everyone in conversations about death and dying — including people who may not understand complex language or who communicate differently. Participants will leave with practical ideas they can use in their own workplace, whether or not they work directly with people with learning disabilities. The toolkit is free to download from The Victoria & Stuart Project, and participants are welcome to explore the resources at the exhibition stands. Tuffrey-Wijne - Biography: Irene Tuffrey-Wijne is Professor of Intellectual Disability & Palliative Care at Kingston University and leads The KIND Research Group, where researchers with and without learning disabilities work together on research about death, dying, and bereavement. Since 2001, Irene has led research and development in learning disability, bereavement, and palliative care. Widely published and internationally recognised, she is a leading expert in palliative care for people with learning disabilities. Inclusive research, involving people with learning disabilities as participants and paid researchers, is central to her work.
