Hidden high in the Carpathian Mountains, Poenari Castle is often considered the true fortress of Vlad the Impaler — the historical figure who inspired the legend of Dracula. Unlike the more famous Bran Castle, this remote and ruined stronghold was actually used by Vlad himself, making it one of the most authentic locations connected to his story.
Built in the 15th century and dramatically expanded under Vlad’s rule, the castle served as a strategic refuge and military outpost. Perched on a steep cliff and accessible only by climbing hundreds of steps, it was designed to be nearly impossible to conquer.
But its history is as brutal as it is fascinating. Stories tell of forced labor, harsh punishments, and the relentless rule of a man whose legacy would become one of the darkest legends in history.
