An Unparalleled Experience Made Better: We Drive the Ferrari Purosangue Handling Speciale
Overview
Ferrari's Purosangue HS (Handling Speciale) improves the car's handling without any new suspension hardware. It rides on the same Pirelli P Zero summer tires as the standard Purosangue (255/35R-22 front, 315/30R-23 rear), and the sharper response comes from new software for its TrueActive Spool Valve (TASV) adaptive dampers, supplied by Multimatic. A 48-volt electric motor drives a ball screw at each damper, adjusting damping force and ride height at every corner 20 times per second. The updated code reduces body movement by a claimed 10 percent. Ferrari says the HS is not meant to be extreme and remains livable every day.
Design and Layout
Ferrari avoids calling the Purosangue an SUV, preferring "high-riding sports car." Its packaging matches the 12Cilindri, with a front-mid-mounted V-12 fully behind the front axle and a rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle, giving a 49/51 front-to-rear weight distribution. The 6.5-liter V-12 makes 715 hp and revs to 8,250 rpm, which sets it apart from the powerful SUVs from Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Porsche.
Track Impressions
The reviewers drove the HS at Alfa Romeo's Balocco Proving Ground in northwest Italy, on a tight circuit with 36 turns in 3.3 miles and elevation changes that sent the car airborne twice per lap. The TASV suspension was so composed that landings produced only a distant clunk and a minor scrape. The car held over 100 mph in a long sweeper while near the limit of adhesion. The HS is highly reactive, with more than half of its two-plus-ton mass ready to overwhelm the rear tires and induce rotation, so a steady right foot and quick hands are recommended. Even so, the steering feels alive and communicative. Ferrari also lets in more engine noise, and the dual-clutch shifts with more authority.
Standout Features
Even the standard Purosangue is distinctive, with its V-12 layout, forward-opening hood, power-operated rear-hinged back doors, and rear seats nearly identical to the fronts, including standard heating, ventilation, and massage. The HS adds carbon-fiber scudetti and the suspension tuning for $27,600, which the reviewers call worth it for a buyer who would spend that much on options anyway.
