We’ll start with the basics of rocket engines and why Raptor needs such powerful turbopumps. Then, we’ll explain what makes full-flow staged combustion different from more traditional engine cycles. From there, we’ll follow the methane and liquid oxygen through the engine from startup to full thrust. You’ll see how engine chill, spin-start, pre-burners, turbines, pumps, and the main combustion chamber all work together. We’ll also look at how Raptor essentially powers its own turbopumps once the engine gets running. And the crazy part is that this entire startup process happens in roughly a second. Inside the SpaceX Raptor 3 Engine After that, we’ll take a look at Space Pioneer’s Tianhuo-21 engine and why its design has drawn comparisons to Raptor 3. We’ll also look at how Raptor evolved from Raptor 1 to Raptor 2 and finally Raptor 3. Because while Raptor 3 may look surprisingly simple on the outside, much of its complexity has simply been packed inside the engine. So, let’s take a closer look at one of the most interesting methane rocket engines ever developed, and see what really makes Raptor 3 so complicated.
