This lesson explains how Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) coordinate support for children and young people with significant special educational needs and disabilities. It outlines the legal foundations of EHCPs, including the Children and Families Act 2014, the SEND Code of Practice and the Equality Act 2010. You will explore how plans remain person-centred by placing a child’s views, family involvement and aspirations at the heart of decision-making. The lesson also introduces the assess, plan, do, review cycle and shows how it helps practitioners measure progress and adapt support as needs change. In an early years setting, EHCP information can inform accessible activities, reasonable adjustments and environmental adaptations across the EYFS prime areas. A practical example demonstrates how practitioners can use an EHCP to support participation, collaborate with other professionals and review outcomes in everyday work. The lesson closes with four key takeaways about legal duties, inclusion, person-centred planning and responsive support.
