Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is a famous ancient cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, located 6.5 km from the city center of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, in the Garhi Cantonment area. Mythology and History The Drona Cave: According to the cave inside the temple was used as a residence by Guru Dronacharya, the royal teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas during the Mahabharata. Because of this, the cavern is widely known as the Drona Cave. The Legend of Ashwathama: Legend says Dronacharya's young son Ashwathama prayed to Lord Shiva for milk when the family could not afford it, and Shiva blessed him with milk dripping from the Shivalinga. Name Origin: The name Tapkeshwar comes from the Hindi word "Tapak," meaning "to drip," and "Ishwar," meaning God, referring to the continuous stream of water drops falling from the cave ceiling onto the sacred Shivalinga. Natural Shivalinga: The main sanctum houses a self-manifested (swayambhu) Shivalinga positioned deep inside the natural limestone cave. Dripping Water: Water continuously percolates through the rock ceiling, naturally bathing the Shivalinga before disappearing into the ground and reappearing a short distance away. River Setting: The temple rests peacefully on the banks of a seasonal river (Tons/Asan stream) at the foothills of the Shivalik range. Visitor Information Timings: Open daily from 4:00 AM to 10:30 PM. Entry Fee: Free for all visitors. Best Time to Visit: Maha Shivratri (held in February or March) draws massive crowds for the annual Tapkeshwar Mela. Early morning hours are ideal for a peaceful darshan.
