Is this hidden bike path why Melbourne won best city?

Melbourne has just officially copped third place in the Global Liveability Index, making it the number one most liveable city in Australia. We smashed it with perfect scores in healthcare and education. Today, I’m out on the gravel bike to find a hidden bike path that feels less like a commuter thoroughfare and more like an oasis. It’s a proper nature tunnel right on our doorstep, and it got me thinking: how did we only score 96 out of 100 for infrastructure with trails like this? I start this ride at Flinders St Station and go via Parliament House (where NAIDOC was celebrating their 50 years), to reach the Gipps St Bridge / Capital City Trail. This shared path connected onto the Main Yarra Trail, which takes you to the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail in the outer eastern suburbs. From there, I turned around onto the Eastlink Trail which joined the Koonung Creek Trail, after navigating the various Eastern Freeway upgrade detours, I then found myself back in the city for sunset. Now, I’m not saying this bike path will realign your chakras or shield you from 5G, but staring down this tree canopy is definitely more therapeutic than watching a media personality dog whistle for charlatans who think alkaline diet smoothies cure everything.
