The Langoor Mela is a unique, 10-day annual festival held during Navratri at the historic Bada Hanuman Mandir (inside the Durgiana Temple complex) in Amritsar, Punjab. It serves as a vibrant thanksgiving celebration dedicated to Lord Hanuman. According to tradition, couples seeking to have a child visit the temple to make a vow (mannat). Once their wish is fulfilled, parents return during Navratri to dress their children as "langoors" (monkeys) to symbolize Lord Hanuman’s monkey army. While historically focused on the birth of sons, parents today celebrate the blessing of both sons and daughters, with families of various faiths participating.
The Attire: Children wear bright silver or red outfits, wear conical caps, and carry toy maces (gadas). The Rituals: The children playfully jump and dance to drumbeats in the temple courtyard. Over the 10-day period, the participating families observe strict disciplines, including remaining barefoot, eating only pure vegetarian (satvik) food, and sleeping on the floor. The Legend: The temple holds a rare idol of Lord Hanuman in a sitting posture and is believed to be the exact spot where Lord Rama's twin sons, Luv and Kush, once tied Hanuman to an ancient banyan tree.
