Artificial Harmonics are played on the violin and viola by pressing down the string with first finger, and lightly touching the string a P4 higher with the fourth finger. They are played on the cello and the double bass by pressing down the string with the thumb, and lightly touching the string a P4 higher with the 3rd finger. The pitch produced is two octaves higher than the stopped pitch.
