WHEN WOMEN RULED THE PHILIPPINES BEFORE SPAIN What if the history you were taught left out some of the most powerful women of the ancient Philippines? Long before Spanish colonization, women in the Philippine archipelago could hold positions of political, economic, spiritual, and military influence. They could own property, participate in trade, advise rulers, lead communities, and—according to historical traditions and accounts—rule as powerful leaders. In this episode of Echoes of the Empires, we journey into the forgotten world of pre-colonial Philippines and explore the stories surrounding legendary figures such as Dayang-Dayang of Taguig and Urduja of Pangasinan. But this story goes deeper than two legendary women. We examine the babaylan, women who held important spiritual and social authority; the role of women in commerce and property; female participation in warfare and governance; and the ways Spanish colonial rule transformed indigenous institutions and historical narratives. What happened to these stories after Spain arrived? Were powerful women deliberately erased from history—or did their stories survive through oral traditions, foreign records, archaeology, and later historical research? In this video, we explore the evidence, the traditions, and the historical debates surrounding one of the most fascinating questions about the pre-colonial Philippines: What was the true role of women before Spain? From warrior queens to spiritual leaders, merchants, political advisors, and community leaders, these stories reveal a Philippines far more complex than the simplistic image of a primitive society waiting to be "civilized." History isn't always lost. Sometimes, it's buried. And sometimes, the echoes are still loud enough to hear. Watch until the end and decide for yourself.
