Pompeii was buried by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. But the eruption left behind more than ruins. This full documentary follows the Roman city from everyday life to disaster, burial and the scientific investigations reshaping how we understand its people.
It begins with a question most accounts skip: when did Pompeii die? The traditional date is less certain than it once seemed. Before the ash, there were bakeries, workshops, busy streets and painted homes. Through six connected chapters, Flint & Folio explores the city beneath the mountain, the eruption's changing dangers, and the decisions people faced as pumice fell and darkness spread across the Bay of Naples.
Follow Pliny the Elder's voyage toward the danger, the night at Stabiae, and the different experiences of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Then examine the pyroclastic currents, the layers of volcanic deposits and the paradox at the heart of Pompeii: destruction also preserved parts of a living Roman world.
The final chapter turns to the plaster casts. How were they made? What survives inside them? What happens when ancient DNA challenges relationships that generations of viewers assumed were certain - and what can a small sample never tell us? It ends in the Garden of the Fugitives, where a 2026 re-examination of one victim's belongings suggests, but does not prove, a connection with medical practice.
This is not the story of a city frozen perfectly in one moment. It is the story of a layered, incomplete record that is still being read.
