On this episode, Brandon at Be Aircooled tackles a classic Porsche 912 with a frustrating hot start problem—a common issue on carbureted engines where the car runs fine cold, but struggles to restart once heat builds up. After a bit of diagnosis (and a little storytelling along the way), the culprit reveals itself: Weber carburetors mounted on Solex manifolds with adapter plates—creating excessive heat transfer, fuel boil, and inconsistent starting. Out come the carbs, manifolds, and a fair bit of questionable previous work, and in goes the proper setup—correct Weber manifolds, phenolic spacers to reduce heat soak, and a much-needed refresh of the fuel system routing. While we’re in there, the ignition system gets some love too, along with a valve adjustment that was… long overdue. With everything buttoned back up, it’s time for one of the most satisfying parts of the process—carburetor tuning and synchronization, dialing in idle, setting lean best mixture, and bringing the engine back into harmony the old-school way. By the end of it all, this Porsche 912 is idling smooth, starting hot without complaint, and ready for what it was meant to do—hit the road. And of course, it wouldn’t be complete without a proper test drive on a beautiful day to enjoy the results of a job well done. If you're into classic Porsche repair, Weber carb tuning, air-cooled engines, or just enjoy watching mechanical problem-solving done right, this one’s for you.
