This is the first lesson every student in the AC course. It’s not about beer. It’s about how to approach prepping for the AC exam, where the free points are, and the prep habits that separate people who pass on the first try from those who end up retaking it.
What’s covered
1. Where this course came from and what you get with it
2. What we expect from students
3. Our general approach to the exam. There is no hack, remember whose exam it is, prep under exam conditions, the syllabus is the exam, industry experience helps but isn’t required, and everything you learn is connected
4. Free points - commercial examples, vital stats, and evocative descriptive language
5. The written exam format, with sample multiple-choice, matching, and essay questions
6. Essay strategies. Answer what’s asked, say what you mean, be specific, read the BJCP guidelines critically, never leave anything blank
The full course has reading lists organized by syllabus section, lessons covering each syllabus section, loads of tips and tricks for crushing the exam, the Beer Scholar Study Lab (containing all your flashcards, section quizzes, and full practice exams), options for essay feedback and practice oral exams, an active online community, and weekly live tastings with me and Advanced Cicerone Matthew Shapiro.
