Long before there's any color in the sky, one low note drifts in from somewhere out in the white and then lets the quiet close over it again. Everything up here is wet — the grass, the fence wire, the moss on the old stone trough, the small blue flowers still half asleep in the fog. Three steps into the meadow and your boots are soaked through, and it doesn't matter at all. The cattle are shapes rather than animals, moving slow through the gray, and the whole hill is waiting for the light to decide when it's ready. Somewhere in that wet green a small shadow is already awake — velvet black against the soft green, gold eyes carried just above the grass, moving at exactly the pace this morning deserves. She'll turn up again asleep in the warm hay while the sun finally clears the ridge, and then curled in the clover once the day has gone gold and easy. The music sits right down in the fog with it. Deep, unhurried basslines under everything, warm baritone vocals rising like steam off a milk pail, round Rhodes chords and soft-touch guitar keeping the whole thing open and slow. A long, wide groove with nothing sharp in it — cool air, warm low end, and nothing that pulls at your attention while you work. Thank you for walking the wet grass with us this morning.
