There's a military division that does more to sing the glory of each branch, and to comfort, encourage and inspire, than any other. Yet, no one's singing their praises. We @America250Band are correcting that huge oversight in this "Tribute to the Bands of the Armed Forces."
By Dr. Donny "Rocker" Deever
[Intro]
They play for the brave, they play for the fallen,
they play when the patriots need a callin'.
They give every branch its thunder and glory—
Now let the band tell its story.
[Verse 1]
Before the bugle kissed the dawn,
before the flag was raised,
before the young recruits stood tall
and learned the songs of praise—
There came a drumbeat down the road,
a fife through smoke and rain,
a melody that taught the heart
to march through fear and pain.
From battlefield to harbor lights,
from desert dust to snow,
music gave the weary strength
when there were miles to go.
And still today in dress and brass,
with polished shoes and chrome,
they lift the soul of every branch—
The ones who play us home.
[Chorus]
They play the nation into courage,
they play the fallen home.
They give the flag a living voice
wherever heroes roam.
For valor, pride, and fellowship,
for liberty they sing,
they serve in notes, in breath, in time—
And with them freedom rings!
So raise a cheer, let trumpets rise,
let strings and voices come—
For the bands of the Armed Forces,
the heartbeat of the drum!
[Verse 2]
They stand at gravesides in the cold
when tiers are falling slow,
and somehow make a mother feel
what words could never show.
They sound the notes of “Taps” at dusk,
so gentle, clear, and deep,
and place a nation’s gratitude
where silent heroes sleep.
They march in town parades at noon,
they play for children’s eyes,
they show the public who we are
when colors fill the skies.
They help recruit the future brave,
they make the young believe
that service has a noble sound
the heart can still receive.
[Chorus]
They play the nation into courage,
they play the fallen home.
They give the flag a living voice
wherever heroes roam.
For valor, pride, and fellowship,
for liberty they sing,
they serve in notes, in breath, in time—
And with them freedom rings!
So raise a cheer, let trumpets rise,
let strings and voices come—
For the bands of the Armed Forces,
the heartbeat of the drum!
[Verse 3]
At high command and state affairs,
when presidents walk through,
when generals salute the flag
and all the world can view,
they bring the weight of history,
the dignity of years,
the sound of every sacrifice,
the joy behind the tiers.
Army brass and Navy blue,
Marine Corps scarlet pride,
Air Force wings in silver song,
Coast Guard by the tide;
Reserve and Guard, academies,
field bands brave and bright,
they carry every service song
like banners made of light.
[Pre-Chorus]
Some fight with steel, some fly through flame,
some sail the stormy foam;
Some hold the line with melody—
The ones who play us home.
[Chorus]
They play the nation into courage,
they play the fallen home.
They give the flag a living voice
wherever heroes roam.
For valor, pride, and fellowship,
for liberty they sing,
they serve in notes, in breath, in time—
And with them freedom rings!
So raise a cheer, let trumpets rise,
let strings and voices come—
For the bands of the Armed Forces,
the heartbeat of the drum!
[Bridge]
Do not think it’s only music,
do not call it only art.
It takes a soldier’s discipline
to steady trembling hearts.
It takes courage in the silence,
it takes breath when grief is near,
it takes faith to play for families
through the weight of every tier.
They honor everybody else,
then quietly pack their own;
But every note they leave behind
becomes a marching tone.
A cadence for the homesick,
a hymn for those who fall,
a song for all who serve the flag—
A song that serves them all.
[Breakdown]
Sound the brass for duty,
roll the snare for pride.
Lift the song for freedom,
let the ranks reply.
For the living, for the fallen,
for the young still yet to come—
The bands of the Armed Forces
are the heartbeat of the drum.
[Final Chorus]
They play the nation into courage,
they play the fallen home.
They give the flag a living voice
wherever heroes roam.
For valor, pride, and fellowship,
for liberty they sing,
they serve in notes, in breath, in time—
And with them freedom rings!
So raise a cheer, let trumpets rise,
let strings and voices come—
For the bands of the Armed Forces,
the heartbeat of the drum!
When the parade turns the corner,
when the folded flag is shown,
when a child stands up taller
for the songs they've aways known,
when the troops need one more reason
to remember why they came,
there’s a band dressed up in uniform
putting courage into flame.
[Outro]
They play for the brave, they play for the fallen,
they play when the patriots need a callin'.
They march with each branch, they're the notes made strong—
The cadence, the spirit, the calling, the song.
[Tag]
They perform near and far, but where ere they roam…
This song's for the ones who play us home.
