At the time, John William Colenso, the Anglican Bishop of Natal in South Africa, published a series of writings using rationalism and higher criticism to question the historical accuracy and divine authority of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible). Deeply grieved by this assault on biblical authority, a young curate serving in a poor district of London, Samuel John Stone, decided to defend the faith. To help uneducated laypeople ground their confidence in scripture, he wrote a collection of twelve hymns based on the articles of the Apostles' Creed. The Church's One Foundation was written to reflect the article: "I believe in the Holy Catholic [Universal] Church." Stone’s verses powerfully declare that the Church's foundation does not rest on human philosophy, worldly intellect, or secular power, but solely on Jesus Christ and His divine Word. No matter how much the Church is torn by internal schisms, mocked by the world, or distressed by external storms and persecutions, it will endure through the night and ultimately triumph in the glorious new creation. The text was later paired with the majestic tune AURELIA, composed by the renowned organist Samuel Sebastian Wesley. Together, the lyrics and melody formed an unshakeable hymn of victory.
