Lyrics: Verse 1 PTSD is hard. Some people don’t even know what those four letters mean. Post-Traumatic. Stress. Disorder. Lucky them. No trauma. No flashbacks. No visions that are so horrible and should never have happened. No alarms going off inside your own body from war when there’s no fucking enemy in the room anymore. People told me, “You’re safe now.” Yeah. One reminder and I was back there. Back in the field. Back at war. Back in those days. Back in the fear. Powerless. The unknown. Shock. Eyes searching for the threat. Survival. To leave and still occupy the ground inside my head. I hated it. Pre-Chorus Then somebody sat beside me and said, “You don’t have to do this alone.” I met a social worker kind and trained in PTSD. He said, E. M. D. R. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. They make sure you are safe. So I planted my boots on the floor. Watched the lights with someone safe and kind. LEFT. RIGHT. LEFT. RIGHT. Back and forth. And walked straight into those horrible days. I’d spent years trying to escape but couldn’t. Bullied at work and they were haunting me and I was exhausted. And this time with my memories, someone spoke to me, we spoke about what happened and I made a different choice. I looked at it with someone safe. ⸻ Chorus EMDR worked for me. I WENT BACK BUT I DIDN’T GO ALONE. Someone steady sat beside me while I faced the memories that used to scare me. LEFT. RIGHT. BACK AND FORTH. Coloured lights across the room. Weight in my hands. Vibration against my skin. NOT ANYMORE. I could pause. I could stop. I could leave. MY CHOICE. I felt so angry. And I grieved. Yeah— I fucking cried. Then something else came. Freedom. Verse 2 That’s what I learned doing EMDR. You can walk back into the worst days of your life. You can remember the battlefield I saw it all again. But my boots were in this room with someone safe. Someone trained was beside me. LEFT. RIGHT. BACK AND FORTH. And slowly— you got smaller. Not what you did. I saw it differently. I thought about my options, choices in that moment. I survived Chorus EMDR worked for me. I WENT BACK BUT I DIDN’T GO ALONE. Someone steady sat beside me while I faced the memories that used to scare me. LEFT. RIGHT. BACK AND FORTH. Coloured lights across the room. Weight in my hands. Vibration against my skin. NOT ANYMORE. I could pause. I could stop. I could leave. MY CHOICE. I felt so angry. And I grieved. Yeah— I fucking cried. Then something else came. Freedom. Bridge EMDR helped me but everyone is different. Each trauma is unique. Just make sure you find someone safe.Feel it in your body. Your instincts know. Chorus EMDR worked for me. I WENT BACK BUT I DIDN’T GO ALONE. Someone steady sat beside me while I faced the memories that used to scare me. LEFT. RIGHT. BACK AND FORTH. Coloured lights across the room. Weight in my hands. Vibration against my skin. NOT ANYMORE. I could pause. I could stop. I could leave. MY CHOICE. I felt so angry. And I grieved. Yeah— I fucking cried. Then something else came. Freedom.
