Kadamattom is a place located at Kolenchery, at a distance of 25 km from Ernakulam district of Kerala in India. It is about 12 km near to the busy Muvattupuzha town near the Kochi-Madurai National Highway. The legendary Kadamattom Church is one the most famous Christian churches in Kerala telling stories of supernatural powers of the legendary priest called Kadamattathu Kathanar. Father Mar Abo came to India from Persia in the 4th century A.D. to spread Christianity. Kadamattom Church is believed to be the church built by a local ruler who recognized his divine powers. The miraculous life story of the priest Kadamattathu Kathanar (also known as Kadamattathachan ) begins.from here. Paulose was the son of a widow who converted to Christianity in those days after realizing the divine powers of Father Mar Abo. Father Mar Abo cared Paulose not just as a helper, but as his own son. Paulose, who was once captured by cannibals while grazing cows and later escaped from their dungeon using the magic he had learned from them. He took refuge in Kadamattam Church when they ran after him. Poyodam Church and Poyodam Well ( pathala kinar ) are just 150 meters near the main Kadamattam Church. A related belief is that it was through this well that Paulose the Deacon went under the earth. Paulose Deacon, who had returned after casting out evil spirits, was later ordained as a priest by Father Abo. Father Mar Abo traveled from Kadamattam to other lands to spread Christianity. When priest Paulose became famous for his divine powers to save his land from demonic forces, local people honored him with the title of ‘Kathanar’ (Cattanar or Kattanar). From there onwards he was called as 'Kadamattathu Kathanar' or 'Kadamattathachan'. The remains of Father Abo are buried in a special tomb in Kadamattom Church where an ancient Persian cross erected can also be seen.
