Everyone thinks cutting your utility bill means sitting in the cold or sweating all summer. That's the part they get wrong. I cut mine fifteen ways at 55 — and I was never once cold, and never once too hot.

None of this is about suffering. Every one of these keeps the exact same comfort and simply cuts the waste — the heat leaking out, the machines left running, the warmth we pay for and never feel. Most cost little or nothing to start.
So I'm counting them down from fifteen to one — drafts, curtains, the water heater, the thermostat, the dryer, and more — with what each one saves. Number one isn't a gadget or a setting. It's the thing that changed how I think about comfort altogether, and it took me years to see it.
00:00 The comfort myth
00:30 What I actually did
02:01 Seal drafts & work the curtains
03:45 LED bulbs
04:38 Water heater & ceiling fans
06:21 Thermostat setback
07:12 Cold wash & air-drying
08:56 Phantom power
09:50 Fix the drips (water bill)
10:40 Dishwasher & hidden leaks
12:14 Cook cool in summer
13:02 Heat one room
13:48 Number one: comfort is a habit
15:49 What it really bought me
All fifteen ways, in short:
Seal the drafts, and work the curtains with the sun
LED bulbs, water heater to 120°, ceiling fans both seasons
Thermostat setback at night and away
Cold-water washing, and air-drying the laundry
Kill the phantom power, fix the drips, slow the flow
Full-load dishwasher, no heat-dry
Seal the hidden leaks — attic hatch, outlets, water-heater blanket
Cook cool in summer, and heat the room you're in
And the one belief underneath all of them
I'm Maureen. At 55 I started paying attention to where my money was actually going, and I've been sharing what works ever since. Old-fashioned habits that still work in 2026. New videos every Wednesday and Saturday.
Everything I share comes from running my own household. Please use your own good judgement with your own money.
