Come with us as we carry out a pre roar recon mission into the Kaweka Forest Park to see if the area is suitable for a roar trip!
This video will help anyone who is venturing into the Harkness Valley as I show off Tussock Hut, Otore Saddle Shelter and Harkness Hut.
We start by flying into the Ngaruroro River area where we push up a tussock covered valley and find some great spots for glassing the open areas as well as checking out the bushy areas. There is an added bonus to this location and that is the spectacular fishing that can be had on the Ngaruroro River!
Tussock Hut
There is great hunting in this valley, from bush to open tussock areas. The bush can be very tight in some areas as the video shows, there is outstanding glassing to be had in this valley. I would say that this valley could be really good in the roar.
Otore Saddle
There is some really good bush leading up to and around the saddle. There is a shelter, a long drop and a helipad at this location. This would be a great location in the roar and is worth going back too.
Harkness Hut
It takes 2hr 20mins to hike from Tussock Hut to Harkness Hut, about half of this is journey involves multiple (20+) river crossings, so expect wet feet! This is a great hut, and lots of great hunting spots, this would be great to hunt in the roar!
Well what else can be said, we will definitely be coming back to some these spots for our roar trip… might be armed with a fishing rod as well!
