Julian Calv, Moondog Grand Student, led a presentation on the Life & Music of Louis Hardin, better known as Moondog on Friday, October 16, 2026 at the First Presbyterian Union Church, 90 North Ave., Owego, NY. It was followed by a performance of Moondog's selected works with the The Trimbtych Ensemble. ABOUT MOONDOG Street musician, instrument maker, and avant-garde composer, Louis Thomas Hardin (1916-1999), known as Moondog, inspired musicians as varied as Charlie Parker, Frank Zappa, and Igor Stravinsky. Known to perform his original compositions on Sixth Avenue in full Viking regalia, Moondog also maintained a home upstate in Candor, New York. These performances will celebrate the life of a true American original, whose contributions to jazz, classical, indie, folk, and rock music are incalculable. ABOUT JULIAN CALV Julian Calv is an American composer, singer, and trimbist. Born February 18, 1999, in New Brunswick, NJ, Julian grew up in Bethlehem Township, NJ. He graduated from Moravian University in 2021 with a Bachelor’s of Music focusing on composition, education, and classical piano. While there he studied piano with Barbara Thompson and Dan DeChellis, and composition with Larry Lipkis and Scott Watson. In 2021 he completed an independent study of 20th c. American composer Louis T. Hardin, AKA Moondog's, creative life. Throughout the course of this impactful project, he established an apprenticeship with Stefan Lakatos. Self-proclaimed as Moondog’s grand-student, Julian is the sole prodigy of Stefan Lakatos– who, to quote Moondog himself, is “the leading [and only] exponent of the Moondog method of drumming.” Through both this mentorship and dedicated study of Moondog's creative life, he upholds his grand-teacher's dying wish to “please take care of my music.” Learning to build and play the trimba, Moondog's invented percussion instrument, Julian has sculpted a unique soundscape by preserving the sonic tradition of his mentors. He re-imagines that same tradition in his original compositions. ABOUT THE TRIMBTYCH ENSEMBLE Overview: The Trimbtych ensemble was established by me over the course of a couple years. I've regularly been performing Hardin's music with a rotating cast of musicians and have recently formally referred to this collective as Trimbtych. The name references the trimba combined with tych for fortune. The ensemble is responsible for preserving the performance practice of Hardin's traditional music interpretations. Members: Sarah Penna: Poetry, vocals, shruti box Andrew Schulman: Vocals Alex Stewart: Piano Mike Alfieri: Drum kit
