This video describes the typical procedure for setting up a Schulze RST-01 ring shear tester at the Helmholtz Laboratory for Tectonic Modelling (Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences). The ring shear tester is used to quantify the frictional properties of granular materials, such as sands and glass beads. Here we show the steps that are required to prepare the sample in the cell and how it is mounted in the machine. Additionally, we show our standardized workflow for testing the materials as well as the necessary steps after a typical test. This video is associated to Rudolf et al. 2023 (https://doi.org/10.5194/se-14-311-2023): Time-dependent frictional properties of granular materials used in analogue modelling: implications for mimicking fault healing during reactivation and inversion which is part of the special issue in EGU Solid Earth on Analogue modelling of basin inversion (https://se.copernicus.org/articles/sp....
