South Africa’s asylum system is facing growing pressure after thousands of people gathered at Home Affairs offices following the reopening of access to asylum applications. In Durban, tensions have escalated, with anti-illegal immigration groups protesting outside the Refugee Reception Centre and police turning away hundreds of asylum seekers over security concerns.
