Perched on the shores of Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle is one of Switzerland's most famous and visually spectacular fortresses. With its towers, underground chambers, and dramatic position between the lake and mountains, Chillon looks like something from a medieval legend.
But behind its beautiful walls lies a history of imprisonment, torture, political intrigue, and war.
For centuries, Chillon was controlled by the powerful Counts of Savoy, who used the fortress to control an important route through the Alps. Its strategic location made it a valuable military and political stronghold, while its underground chambers became infamous as a place of imprisonment.
Chillon became particularly famous because of François Bonivard, a Genevan nobleman and political opponent of the Duke of Savoy. Imprisoned at Chillon in the 16th century, Bonivard spent years chained to a pillar in the castle's underground dungeon. His story later inspired Lord Byron's famous poem The Prisoner of Chillon, transforming the castle into a symbol of medieval suffering and political oppression.
But how much of the legend is actually true?
