BBC News special: Conservative leadership election 1995

A BBC News special on the result of the Conservative Party leadership election, 4 July 1995. John Major had resigned as party leader in order to force a contest, expecting a backbench critic to stand as a 'stalking horse'. Instead John Redwood, a Cabinet member (Secretary of State for Wales) resigned his post to challenge. Major privately set himself the target of getting 215 votes in order to claim he had a convincing win. The BBC coverage is led by David Dimbleby with various reporters.
