How does the human mind process a single conversation in a loud, crowded room while ignoring dozens of competing sounds ? In this video, we explore the cognitive architectures of selective attention as outlined by Sternberg, tracing how psychologists solved the famous cocktail party problem . We walk through the landmark experiments in dichotic listening and shadowing , comparing Broadbent’s Early-Filter Model , Moray’s Selective Filter , Treisman’s Attenuation Model , and Deutsch & Deutsch’s Late-Filter Model . Finally, we examine Ulric Neisser’s synthesis, which reconciles these competing models by dividing attention into preattentive automatic processes and controlled attentive processing .
