I asked God if I should get divorced. He said, "Jump. I've got you." Then He sent the butterflies.
Butterflies is the third song in my Exodus series, written for every woman who has left a controlling relationship and is learning, slowly, to trust herself, her body, and her faith again. This is the Promised Land: not a perfect ending, just a quiet one that finally belongs to you.
Original lyrics and concept by Michelle Baric. Music produced with Suno.

LYRICS
[Intro]
I asked God if I should get divorced.
He said, jump.
I've got you.
Then He sent the butterflies.
[Verse 1]
Cereal for dinner at a quarter after nine
Nobody at the table telling me it's not the time
Bought a ticket home to sit with Mom and Dad
Didn't ask a soul, just packed the bag I had
[Pre-Chorus]
Quiet like the center of a hurricane
I kept bracing for the other side to come again
[Chorus]
Butterflies, butterflies
I had to melt to nothing before I learned to fly
All those years on the ground, I couldn't see the sky
Now I see the whole field, now I understand why
He sent one for the jump, one for the fall
One for the hands that caught me through it all
Butterflies
[Verse 2]
Took a stranger's hand on a Saturday floor
Felt my body wake up like it knew the steps before
Felt the beat before he moved, nothing left to fear
Turns out following is easy when the one who leads can hear
[Pre-Chorus]
Still got giants, money, getting old alone
Who am I if I'm not wife, now the children all are grown
[Bridge]
Promised land in borrowed rooms, a suitcase by the door
I prayed for freedom, didn't know it meant needing less, not more
Now I pray forgive me, forgive him, forgive them all
Let me loosen up my hands, let me stop bracing for the fall
There's a calm inside my body, restless but it's mine
You said jump, I've got you, and You caught me every time
[Final Chorus]
...
If my children ever ask me why the butterflies
I'll tell them every one was God's reply
Butterflies, I'm learning to fly
[Outro]
To the woman at six-fifteen:
Your gut knows the truth. Trust it.
When it says no, say no.
Keep an eye on the money.
You need a way out.
Be present with your children.
They grow so fast.
