We practice mindfulness because our attention is scattered. We experiment with meditation because the mind is restless. We fast for discipline and health. We exercise to reconnect with the body. We seek silence, retreats, holistic living, generosity, purpose and freedom from destructive habits. But long before the modern wellness and self-help movements, the ancient Orthodox Christian tradition had developed a remarkably complete spiritual way of life concerned with many of these same human struggles.
