Arcadia Unlimited game #26: Paperboy (1984 Atari)

Now we are talking about one of my favorite games of all time!!! I absolutely love Paperboy. I loved it when it came out, I loved it for the last 40 years, and I still love it today! It is one of my go-to games even now when I go down into Arcadia Unlimited. This is just one of the best executed games I've ever played. It's a great concept - you are a boy on a bike, delivering papers. You ride your bike down two city blocks. Some of the homes are paper subscribers, and the rest are not. You are to attempt to deliver papers to all of the subscribers. If at the end of the day, you have delivered to all of the subscribers, you win a new subscriber. If you fail with any subscriber, you lose that subscriber. On top of this primary strategy, you can also vandalize the homes of non-subscribers. You build up a "breakage bonus" as you damage these homes. You can break windows, knock over things, ride your bike over their flowers, and all kinds of other things. It kind of surprises me that Atari made a game that rewards vandalism. But it is fun. This particular Paperboy was just acquired as a Championship Sprint. But since I already had several Championship Sprints, I decided to convert it to Paperboy. Both games came in the same cabinet and changing them is as simple as changing the marquee, control panel, and game ROMs. Well, actually some wiring changes are needed, too. At any rate, I am super excited to offer this game for play in Arcadia Unlimited. This game, by itself, is worth the price of admission. As with (almost) all of our games, this Paperboy is running on all original hardware including original game board, CRT monitor, and original controls, so it should play exactly as you remember it!
